Hi I’m Niall Murphy from Boherbue, Co Cork.
I go to Horizons service in Kanturk called the Oaklands Garden Centre. I do all different
activities and jobs like customer assistance and stocking the garden centre. At this time of year
sowing seeds is one of my favorite things to do as well as repotting plants into bigger pots,
spring cleaning the grounds and during the year I mow lawns weekly.
I have done fundraising before. I like holding events to raise funds for where I work so we can
go on social outings or if we need to upgrade any items in the canteen the money is there. In
the past I have held auctions, raffles, with music and food in our local ‘Murphys Bar’ in
Boherbue. Down through the years we have raised over €40,000.00 excluding what we raised
this year. The money has been used to buy a small bus for Curragh house and many other
projects in Horizons.
This year I organised a Variety Show at Boherbue Hall. It went brilliantly, everything went to
plan. The people who took part were friends and family, we had 12 different acts, dancing,
singing, music, I even sang myself alone on stage ‘i’ll tell me Ma’ was the song I performed.
The week coming up to the event was stressful trying to organize things but I had great help
from Margaret Kiely and my mother Rose.
Boherbue is a village where everyone knows one another and there is always people willing to
give a helping hand. We raised €2,815.00 from the event, selling tickets and sponsorship and
€1,205.00 from online donations so in total €4,020.00.
We would like to spend the funds on a pop – up outdoor Gazebo for outdoor work where we
need protection from the sun and the rain. We also sometimes do Markets and we have
always needed a good one.
I like being involved with groups in the community. I help out with the door and with the raffle
for the local and county SCOIR and I do the gates and hand out programs for the ladies
football club.
I really enjoy and love bringing people together. Niall
