National Volunteer Week at Horizons

This National Volunteering Week, we are shining a light on the incredible individuals who dedicate their time, energy and hearts to Horizons. Our volunteers are the bridge between our organisation and the wider world, ensuring that the people we support lead active, social and fulfilling lives.

We introduce you to inspiring two Horizons’ volunteers: Noreen Dooley and Tom Murray. Between them, they share nearly 60 years of history with Horizons, proving that the impact of giving back lasts a lifetime.

Noreen Dooley
Horizons Volunteer

For Noreen, Horizons isn’t just a place to volunteer; it’s a place she worked for 39 years. After a dedicated career, she knew that her journey with this community was far from over.

Noreen’s Tuesday mornings are a highlight for many. By taking people to Mass and social coffee, she provides a sense of belonging. These outings are vital for building the confidence of the people we support, allowing them to engage with their neighbours and feel at home in their own community.

“I enjoy the interactions and fun I have,” Noreen shares. “It’s of great benefit to the people supported by Horizons being part of the community and socialising.”

The Impact: People look forward to the routine and the friendships that happen over a cup of tea/coffee.

The Reward: Still being involved in a cause that was a big part of her life brings Noreen immense satisfaction.

Her Advice: “Take a chance and go for it – you won’t regret it!”

Tom Murray
Horizons Volunteer

Tom has been a familiar, friendly face at Horizons for 20 years. For Tom, volunteering is finding new ways to connect and share experiences.

While he helps facilitate trips out into the community, Tom’s true gift is his ability to listen. He finds immense joy in the stories and the friendships that have developed over two decades. “We all benefit from interactions weekly with each other,” Tom explains. He sees the relationship as a two-way street where both the volunteer and the person supported grow together.

Tom feels that these outings are essential for the people we support to enjoy the community around them.

How he started: Tom took the initiative by visiting the Horizons website and then dropping into his local centre. He hasn’t looked back since.

Join Our Community

Both Noreen and Tom remind us that volunteering is about the connection we make with one another. Whether it’s through a shared story, a creative solution to a challenge, or the confidence gained from a simple walk-through town, our volunteers make the world a smaller, friendlier place.
