Incredible Achievements for Team Horizons at the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Games

There was a massive sense of pride across Horizons this June as 38 athletes from Horizons representing Team Munster at the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Games, held in Dublin from 18th – 21st June.

The four-day event is one of the most significant highlights in the sporting calendar for Horizons, and this year’s Games showcased the talent and dedication of every athlete who took part. The photographs captured throughout the event tell a wonderful story… smiling faces, proud moments and the unforgettable support of families, staff and friends who were there every step of the way.

More Than Just Medals

While the medal tally was impressive, the Games represented so much more than sporting success.

Susan Murphy from Horizons’ Physical Activity & Sports Department reflected on the importance of the event, noting that the Games provide athletes with a powerful platform to demonstrate their abilities and perseverance. The experience extends far beyond competition, helping athletes build confidence, independence, friendships and lifelong memories.

This year’s achievements were remarkable:

  • 38 athletes
  • 8 sports
  • 17 coach chaperones
  • 46 medals won

🏅 16 Gold
🥈 19 Silver
🥉 11 Bronze

In addition, 10 athletes achieved 4th place, 6 achieved 5th places, 1 achieved 7th place, and 1 received a participation medal. Our athletes competed across eight sports – Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Football, Golf, MATP and Swimming.

These results are a testament to the hard work shown by every member of Team Horizons.

Dedication and Preparation

Success at the Games began long before the opening ceremony. Athletes dedicated hours to training and demonstrating commitment to their chosen sports.

Mary Cashman from the Horizons Physical Activity & Sports Department expressed her appreciation to the coaches whose dedication helped prepare the teams to perform at their very best. She also thanked the many sports centres that generously provided training facilities and gave special recognition to Natasha and her team at Planet Entertainment Centre, Blackpool for their support of the bowling team through the provision of bowling shoes and bowling balls.

Celebrations and Memories

The Games officially got underway with a vibrant opening ceremony in Tallaght, bringing together athletes, coaches and families from across the country in a celebration of sport, inclusion and community spirit.

Paula Reilly from the Horizons Physical Activity & Sports Department highlighted the invaluable role families play in supporting athletes through every success and challenge. One of her standout memories from the Games was seeing an athlete’s brother travel all the way from Australia to support him. A powerful reminder of the love and encouragement that surrounds competitors.

Everyone at Horizons is incredibly proud of our athletes, coaches, staff and families who made the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland Games such a memorable achievement.
