2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and for this notable year people supported by Horizons created art inspired by their dreams and goals for the annual calendar. Dreams can be practical or aspirational dreams as well as dreams that you have when you are asleep and when you are daydreaming.
Each month for 2026 we will share an artwork and celebrate the dreams and goals of people we support. The artwork is underpinned by person centredness as well as national and international policies.

At Horizons we believe the people we support can live extraordinary lives. Our work is guided by one of our values ‘person centredness’. We put the people we support first in everything we do. We treat people we support as individuals and respect their choices.
Under ‘New Directions’, the HSE’s approach to supporting adults with disabilities, person-centredness is a belief that each person has the right to live their own life according to their own aspirations and wishes. It’s about supporting people to make choices based on their wishes, dreams, goals, needs and abilities and giving them the opportunity to take risks to achieve them. The 12 pillars outlined by ‘New Directions’ are signposted within the calendar.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD) affirms that people with disabilities have the right to set and pursue their own goals, just like everyone else. Article 30 states;
Parties shall take appropriate measures to enable persons with disabilities to have the opportunity to develop and utilize their creative, artistic and intellectual potential, not only for their own benefit, but also for the enrichment of society.
Thank you to all of the artists from across Cork City and county for sharing your dreams.
