At Horizons we are so proud to have dedicated community groups that raise funds and advocate on behalf of Horizons.
Meet Mary Barret, a dedicated member of the Mitchelstown Fundraising Committee, sincere thank you Mary and all of the committee for all that you do.
Hello, my name is Mary B. Barrett and I have been a member of the Mitchelstown Fundraising Committee for Horizons (formerly Cope Foundation) for 18 years. I am a retired State General Nurse and Midwife, and I have gained valuable knowledge of adults and children with disabilities.
What is involved in being on the committee?
Our group meets up regularly to come up with event ideas and discuss how we can maximise the events in the community. We host events like coffee mornings and arrange raffles etc. Which brings the community together.
The workload is shared out and we use our resources to make sure that the fundraising efforts are successful. We also discuss how to motivate new members to join our group.
What do you enjoy about being involved?
I really enjoy working with the Horizons staff in Mitchelstown and working with the local people to advocate for Horizons. We have an amazing community and generous local business people who support our events throughout the year. Voluntary work is an opportunity to make new friends and it is great for your mental health. It is also an opportunity to give back and to share your skills.
Do you think that Committees have an impact on the community?
Definitely yes. With support from Horizons Communications and Fundraising Team, we advertise our events in the local newspaper, the local radio station as well as posters in the community to attract as many people as possible. Fundraising events are a great way to meet others in the community and from the business community. It is also an opportunity to learn about the great work that Horizons does. I believe that the committees also have an impact on people supported by the organisation to be valued members of their communities.
How do you get involved in the Horizons Mitchelstown Committee?
I invite anyone who would like to join our committee to come to a meeting and to contact me on mbenedictbarrett1@gmail.com.
A big Thank You to Horizons Communications and Fundraising Team who guide and support us along the way.
